Nawaz shreef latest situation
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif claims his 2017 ouster was orchestrated by the country's former powerful military and intelligence chiefs after he was forced to resign following a corruption conviction.
On Monday, Sharif spoke to leaders of his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party via video link from London, where he has lived in exile since 2019.
At the time - and despite being tried on corruption charges, which he has always denied - Sharif was allowed by the government of his successor, Prime Minister Imran Khan, to leave Pakistan for medical treatment abroad. When Sharif later did not return, the court declared him a fugitive from justice.
Sharif's party announced on Tuesday that he would return ahead of general elections next month. After Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, Sharif's younger brother Shehbaz Sharif served as prime minister until August, when he resigned to allow a caretaker government to run daily life and hold elections.ads
